Winter Gathering & Dance feat. the SplinterTones

Winter Gathering & Dance feat. the SplinterTones

With support from the Opp-Hvidston Foundation, NSMA hosts a winter gathering and dance featuring the tremendously talented, high-octane band the SplinterTones.

Everyone is invited to Hovland Town Hall (4957 East Hwy. 61) to listen to great music, dance, and socialize with friends and neighbors. Come enjoy the light and warmth of community celebration at this dark, cold time of year when we all need it most! There's no admission fee. Donations will be gratefully accepted.

The SplinterTones are a six-piece band who play a zesty mix of tunes in an arrestingly original style. With their rousing rhythmic grooves, vibrant harmonies, and colorful stage presence, the SplinterTones crowd the room and the dance floor with delighted people of all ages. The SplinterTones are: Leah Thomas, accordion and vocals; Rick Brandenburg, drums; Jeff DeShaw, bass and vocals; Max Bichel, violin and vocals; Liz Sivertson, saxophone, clarinet, and vocals; and John Gruber, guitar and vocals.

The Opp-Hvidston Foundation is a small, private family foundation created in 2015 by Patricia Hvidston and Roger Opp. Long-time supporters of the arts, education, housing, and women’s development, Patricia and Roger created the Opp-Hvidston Foundation to help support the community spirit of East Cook County.

Sones de Mexico

Sones de Mexico

Sones de Mexico Ensemble is the country's premier folk music organization specializing in Mexican 'son', including the regional styles of huapango, gustos, chilenas, son jarocho, and more. 25 years ago, the group was formed in Chicago to keep the tradition of Mexican 'son' alive in its many regional forms. The ensemble has developed and popularized many original arrangements of Mexican traditional tunes and has toured nationally and internationally, including performances at the Getty Museum in L.A., New York's Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

While in Grand Marais, Sones de Mexico will teach a two-day residency at Great Expectations School with themes including Musical Geography of Mexico, Mexican Tragic Ballad Songwriting, Danza de Los Viejitos Maskmaking, and Ancient Aztec Dance (Feb. 27 & 28). They will also perform a program at Sawtooth Elementary, teach a folkloric dance class for adults and teens, and perform an evening concert for the public (March 1 at 7 pm).
