Minneapolis Guitar Quartet with Colette Illarde
With the passion, style, and musical sophistication borrowing from the best chamber music and string quartet traditions, the
Minneapolis Guitar Quartet
has successfully made its case as one of the world's leading guitar ensembles since its founding in 1986. "Flawless, musical and witty" (
Classical Guitar Magazine
, England), the MGQ has performed throughout the United States both in recital and with orchestra, balancing a dizzying array of first-rate repertoire ranging from Renaissance and Baroque to Spanish, Latin American and Romantic, to highly imaginative existing and newly commissioned contemporary works. Cutting-edge composer/performer Daniel Bernard Roumain, one of the more than 20 composers commissioned by the MGQ, calls the group "more than a guitar quartet, more than superb musicians, and more than a great chamber group. They are ambassadors of sound, style, and substance."
Since 2006, the MGQ has collaborated with Flamenco dancer
Colette Illarde
, developing two different productions with music by the great Spanish composers Joaquin Rodrigo and Enrique Granados. This dynamic and wide ranging synthesis features music arranged by the MGQ, while Ms. Illarde’s choreography reflects the extraordinary vitality of Spanish culture and includes Spanish regional and folk dancing, classical ballet and flamenco.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

April Verch Band
April Verch is an internationally touring Canadian fiddler, step dancer and singer-songwriter.
Raised in Ottawa Valley, a melting pot of Franco-Celtic flavors from the hard-working loggers who settled the area, Verch was immersed in folk music and dance from childhood. Ferried to dance-filled old-time gatherings and country & western jamborees by her music-loving parents, she followed her older sister into step dancing at age 3, and picked up the fiddle at age 6. By the time Verch graduated high school, she’d won the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship and released a pair of albums, followed by a year at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and a win at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition, which made her the first woman ever to take both of her country’s two top contests. From there she dove into a full-time music career, signing with Rounder Records for a trio of albums—produced by the likes of Bruce Molsky and Dirk Powell—starting to put her delicate soprano to use and experimenting with a more contemporary palette.
The April Verch Band is rounded out by bassist and clawhammer banjo player Cody Walters and guitarist Hayes Griffin, who has a Masters in jazz improv from the New England Conservatory. The band is an energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating outfit, which concludes each concert with Verch fiddling and step dancing—and often executing two entirely different intricate rhythmic patterns—at once.
August 18 - 3 to 7 PM @ Birch Grove
Get Outdoors with the Okee Dokee Brothers! Family Music & Fun Day
NSMA, in collaboration with Birch Grove Foundation, Sugarloaf: The North Shore Stewardship Association, and H.O.B.B.I.T., presents a day of lively, high-quality family entertainment and activities designed to inspire local and visiting children and their caregivers to get active in the outdoors.
The event brigns at 3 PM, with a short informal program for children in Birch Grove's Outdoor Classroom, featuring the Okee Dokee Brothers, MN natives and winners of the 2012 Grammy Award for "Best Children's Album" for their CD "Can You Canoe?" The duo will play, talk about their passion for music and the outdoors, and encourage kids to talk, ask questions, and sing along. That program will be followed by a "free-choice" time of recommended family activities--from hiking or biking the wonderful trail system behind Birch Grove, to a children's walk and activity at nearby Sugarloaf Cove, to making use of Birch Grove's green areas and playground. We are arranging to provide free bike rentals, and trail maps will be provided. From 4:30 to 6 PM, H.O.B.B.I.T. will cook and serve homemade oven-baked pizza, picnic style. At 6 PM, the Okee Dokee Brothers will present an all-ages concert in the Birch Grove Pavilion, featuring songs from their Grammy-winning album.
In case of rain, any/all activities can be moved into Birch Grove's beautiful indoor facilities.
